confident children,literate for life

Volunteer Reading Help (VRH) is a national charity working from branches around the country to help children aged 6-12 who find reading a challenge. For many children, group learning isn’t enough. VRH recruits and trains volunteers to provide individual support to children who have a low reading ability for their age. Many of the children VRH supports lack confidence and have low self-esteem; they may have unhappy home circumstances, a lack of parental support, or speak English as a second language. Without individual support children who find reading difficult fall behind their peers and their behavior may deteriorate too. Giving children a “reading friend” that provides regular, fun sessions can give them new confidence and with that a new interest in books and learning. This is a long-term solution, which can impact on a child’s attitude, and aspirations. The London South East branch of VRH covers Lewisham, Lambeth, Southwark & Greenwich. We currently have 100 volunteers providing regular support to 300 children. However, the need for our services far outstrips our supply of trained volunteers.
